Fantasy Football:
After 120 games and 8 seasons in Cincinnati, 2016 2nd round pick Tyler Boyd is beginning a new chapter of his career after leaving the Bengals for the Tennessee Titans this offseason.
That's noteworthy for fantasy football purposes.
Because in 32 full career games that Boyd played alongside Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, Boyd averaged a strong 11.4 PPR points and 5.8 targets per game.
For context, 11.4 PPR points per game over a 17 game season would have made him fantasy's WR 34 last season.
That's right on pace with his WR 31 finish in 2021 and WR 38 finish in 2022, the two seasons where Joe Burrow played all 16 games and Ja'Marr Chase + Tee Higgins were the team's WR 1 and WR 2.
In other words, Boyd offered WR 3/4/flex level production in fantasy football even with Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins siphoning targets.
And without those guys? Boyd's upside spiked, averaging 13.5 PPR points and 7.7 targets per game in 21 career contests where Burrow played but Higgins and/or Chase did not.
Come week 1 of 2024, however, Boyd will be wearing a different uniform.
So who, then, will fill his shoes and take over as Joe Burrow's new number 3 target?
Enter this year's 3rd round pick (80th overall) from Alabama, Jermaine Burton, who already has solid draft capital on his side heading into the season; Cincinnati will undoubtedly be motivated to get him on the field after spending a relatively early pick on him.
If you're not familiar with Burton, put simply, he's a solid all-around prospect that looks decent both on film and in spreadsheets when considering college production.
He's not the best route runner in this year's draft class per film guru John Chapman, but he is a "big play waiting to happen." He's one of my favorite "sneaky" picks in this year's class.
Of course, it's no sure thing that Burton wins the WR 3 role by week 1: Head Coach Zac Taylor has always liked 6th year man Trenton Irwin, who's done well when given the chance.
(Candidly, Irwin should be drafted higher than he is in 2024 best ball drafts—he's currently free on Drafters.com which is where I play 100% of my best ball).
Cincinnati also drafted Charlie Jones in the 4th round and Andrei Iosivas in the 6th round last year. And that's not even mentioning one of my other sneaky favorites for the 2024 fantasy football season: Mike Gesicki (more coming on that).
Still, as a solid prospect with solid draft capital on his side, Burton is as good a bet as any of them to occupy the WR 3 role in Cincinnati in 2024, and that's noteworthy for fantasy football purposes.
With a big opportunity in front of him to land WR 3 targets in one of the NFL's highest powered offenses when Joe Burrow is under center, Jermaine Burton is a sneaky bet to (far) outperform his current cost of WR 66 in 2024 fantasy football drafts.
On Drafters.com Jermaine Burton is currently being drafted as fantasy's WR 66 around pick 145 (early 13th round).
